The first so-called windows were literally holes cut into the walls of home and buildings centuries ago. The holes were sometimes covered with cloth, wood, or animal hides. The early windows were great for allowing fresh air and light into these ancient buildings, but did little to protect their occupants from the elements. The first protective windows used thin slices of marble, thin animal horns, and pieces of glass bottles were placed into the opening with wood, iron or lead frames. While this was able to achieve some of the uses of a modern picture window, this was not quite easy to see through or sturdy.
The first known civilization to develop full one-piece glass windows were the Romans around 100 A.D. near Alexandria. The glass would start out as blown glass bottles which would be flattened out into the needed thickness and shape for the window opening. The earlier versions of this were hard to see through, but did offer protection from rain and wind. Eventually this form of glass-blown windows and their different colors would be used in Churches and other public structures as stained-glass windows for decoration. This method of glass decoration would develop from the mid-5th century and would peak in their use and amazing artistry in the 12th and 13th centuries in Europe.
