Window Installation in Shoreview MN | Choosing The Right Screen For Your Windows and Doors

St. Paul Window Replacement

Spring has sprung, and that means warmer weather is coming. Opening your windows is a great way to lower your cooling bills and enjoy those fresh scents from the budding trees and flowers. But the warming weather brings more with it than green grass and flowers, it brings back those pesky Mosquitos, which some refer to as Minnesota’s unofficial state bird. No one wants these buzzing, flying, and biting little creatures to get into their home, but homeowners still want to enjoy the fresh air of our wonderful MN Springs. That’s where having good window and door screens come into play. Choosing the right kind for your needs can be cumbersome, but here are a few of the more common options you should consider:

  • Standard fiberglass screen: Fiberglass screens are the industry standard for most new construction homes and for window and door replacement. This type of screen is made from a woven glass yarn, which is then covered in a flexible protective vinyl. This screen does an adequate job of keeping insects out of your MN home. Fiberglass screens do not corrode or stain, which means they will continue to provide insect protection while still retaining their great durability and excellent outward views.
  • Light duty fiberglass screen: This type of screen provides greater airflow and outward visibility than the standard or pet-resistant screens. The glass fibers are thinner, which allows for larger openings between the threads and a small profile which makes these screens all but disappear in your window. There is a drawback however, the finer mesh could allow smaller insects indoors and the screen loses some of its durability and can rip more easily.
  • Pet-Resistant Fiberglass Screen: This type of screen is a heavy-duty, vinyl-coated polyester screen that helps in fighting tears, holes, and stretching caused by pets, which makes it ideal for use in patio doors in addition to windows. Pet-resistant fiberglass screens are very durable, but at a cost. With the thicker fibers and vinyl coating, this can hinder the outward visibility.
  • Aluminum screen: Aluminum is a traditional window screen which uses aluminum in strands in a fine mesh screen. They provide excellent protection from larger insects that could possibly chew or rip through a traditional or light-duty fiberglass screen. Aluminum screens come in several different colors and tints, allowing you to match your style to your home. These screens, although very durable with excellent visibility, do have the potential to corrode over time which could limit their durability and the overall look on your home.

Which is right for me?

Consider all of your options when choosing the right screens for your existing or freshly installed windows and doors. Ensure the screen you choose will have enough durability for the insects, pets, or even kids that will come in contact with them. Also be sure to check the visibility differences between these screen types before making your final purchase decision.
