Energy Efficient Windows are an excellent way to save money and use less energy. Having replacement windows that provide better insulation, less heat transfer, and stop those MN winter drafts will help lower your heating and cooling bills while still maintaining excellent value and visibility. Here are some of the advancements that are helping windows become more efficient.
Layers of Glass – having double-pane or triple-pane glass can help lower the amount of heat or cold air that is able to penetrate the window. Generally, the more layers, the better, but some manufacturers also insert argon gas, which has more insulating properties than air alone. This gap of air or argon gas between the panes of glass create a barrier that allows the window to keep the exterior temps from crossing into the interior of your home.
Low-E Glass – Low-E, or Low-Emissivity glass, is glass that has a coating that helps block out heat, while still allowing light through it. This coating also allows the glass to stop harmful UV light from entering your home and causing damage to furniture and flooring. This coating helps the window keep the heat outside during the summer and the heat inside your Bloomington MN Home during the winter.
U-Value/U-Factor – The U-Value or U-Factor is a rating applied to windows that expresses how much heat is able to flow through a window. A lower U-Value or U-Factor will mean that the window has better insulating properties and will be more energy efficient.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient – The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient or SHGC is a rating that shows how much heat or solar energy is allows to pass through the glass. If you live in Northern states, you will probably want to look for replacement windows that have a higher SHGC rating. In the Southern states, you would likely want less solar heat transfer into your home, so you would want a lower rating to keep extra heat out of your home.
